How can I back out on a lease for an apartment?

My boyfriend and I signed a 1 year lease in May for an apartment. We just broke up and I am a co signer on the lease. I can't afford to live here alone and it is a 1 bedroom so I can't really have a roommate. Will backing out kill my credit and screw up my chance for getting another place? Can I back out of the lease?
