Cleaning free space on hard drive?

I am giving my old comouter to someone and I want to ensure that all my pwords and different account information is gone for good. I have ( or am in the process of of doing) deleted all the various items but was told I needed to erase the free space. Is there a freeware program to do it or do I need to just reformat to make sure? Thanks for any help...
