Why does my 1 year old wake up and refuse to go back to sleep?

Don't take him out of his bed...leave him alone...let him cry himself back to sleep...he's gonna stay up if you keep getting him up when he wakes...if you keep trying to put him back and he cries then you get him up agian, he will think thats what he is supposed to do.
